Isla – Javiera Tejerina-Risso

Statement: References from the cinematic world – its grammar, its history – find their resonance in my work as a video artist. It is indeed through my research around a cinematic form that expresses the “I” that my world as a filmmaker reaches the one the artist.
Initially inspired by my voluntary exile and the autobiographical questions it raised, my artistic research currently attempts to reach something more universal by exploring the idea of movement, the idea of flux, or flow.
The migration experience draws a clear frontier between past and present, here and elsewhere. My work tries to make this frontier tangible to then free myself from it.
Mental flows, within the narrative of souvenirs, along with physical movement, within the act of going towards the other, stimulate the aesthetic research of my work which becomes an attempt to tame the overall persistent flow of our lives. I am interested in migratory flows, urban flows, information flows, blood flows and fluids.
My video installations represent the unity, the individual, but also the movement, the network, the relationship and the interdependence built with the other. A cross reading then emerges: that of the whole and that of a particular element.
We can either focus our attention on the complexity of one specific element and the internal systems that governs it. Or, we can witness the impact of the interaction between the different components, their tensions, their opposition or their coherence, without neglecting the concrete connections and symbolics that unite them.
Overall, the passage of time and the omnipresence of an elsewhere characterize my work.
